Digital Camera Dilemma - finale

Okay, decision made, camera ordered...

I decided to go with the Canon S45.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the majority of my picture taking is "snapshot shooting." Realistically, I am not going to return to photography being a major hobby. I wasn't that great a photographer when I had the time to really work at it; I'm sure not going to be one now.

When all of my rationalizing was done, I decided it is more important to have a camera that is small enough for me to be willing to carry, than to have a "fancy" camera with more bells and whistles, but which can't be thrown into my pocket.

I also liked the idea of being able to carry my camera discreetly, rather than having it slung around my neck thus making me look even more the tourist geek.

As far as the features I'm "losing," it just isn't that likely that I am going to use an external flash, or wide-angle or telephoto add-on lenses. The difference between an f2.0 and an f2.8 lens just isn't going to matter in most situations. The remote and the neutral density filter would be nice-to-haves, but chances are I wouldn't have used them more than a handful of times.

A longer zoom would have been nice, but nothing is perfect - except God's love.

I was able to find a great deal on-line from a reputable on-line dealer, so I'll have my S45 in about three days, and I'll have spent almost $200 less than if I had gone with the G3.

I guess if I find that I am unhappy with the S45, I can always sell it on flea-tray. I got such a good deal, that I should be able to sell it for only a small loss.

Now, I just need to find a good deal on a compact flash card...

Good to see you finally made the decision. I think you'll wind up getting a more professional model next time you're ready to upgrade, then you'll have one of both kinds. This is what I've gotten into now. Trouble is, I always have the portable when I would use the advance features, and I have the good one handy around the house when I need a quick shot and the other's in the glove box. Cest la vie.
