This is something I just don't understand...
I guess it is age or social conditioning, but I just don't understand why people get piercings.
I can deal with pierced ears - one, maybe two - in the earlobe on a female, and maybe one in one earlobe on a guy - but that's about as far as I can deal with. And then, only if the earring is not a super large, heavy one.
Beyond that, it just seems like mutilation to me.
It always amazes me when I see an otherwise attractive person with one or more piercings in the eyebrow, or lip, or nose. To me, it is ugly.
And I really don't understand getting other parts pierced.
Today, I learned more about the variety of parts that people get pierced than I had ever wanted to. I can't believe some of the places that people choose to get pierced.
This happened by accident. I was talking with a friend who was telling me about recent surgery he had for severe sleep apnea. He was telling me how the surgeon had removed excess tissue from his soft palate, and "that dangly thing at the back of your throat." He couldn't remember what it was called, nor could I. So, I did a quick Google search, and discovered that the anatomical part in question was called the uvula.
Unfortunately, one of the links I clicked on led me to a page full of pictures of pierced uvulas.
Gag!
To my amazement, I realized that there was a very extensive site devoted to "body modification."
For the not faint of heart, and the strong of stomach, if you want to explore - graphically - the world of body modification, the url for the site is:
http://www.bmezine.com
and the page with the uvula piercing photos is at:
http://www.bmezine.com/pierce/11-surface/uvula1.html
I have intentionally NOT made these urls links, as I don't want anyone accidentally stumbling onto this site.
THE PICTURES ON THIS SITE ARE EXTREMELY GRAPHIC.
I was really torn about whether to post the urls at all, but decided to go ahead, as long as I provided a clear warning that most (all?) of my readers would NOT want to visit the site.
I don't understand tattoos either, but I'll leave that wondering for another time.

Posted by: Whatever! on December 27, 2003 07:56 PMInteresting... I simply said that I do not understand why people engage in body modification. I didn't say that I thought that people who do are horrible or strange or any other derogatory comment. Why then do the two people who commented on the initial entry feel compelled to attack me personally? And is that sort of response indicative of an open minded person?

Posted by: on January 13, 2005 04:52 PMpersonally, i'm thinking of getting my uvula pierced. my friend just got the nape of her neck pierced. it's cool. and i'm not tatooed or anything, i only have my bellybutton pierced and my ears 2 times each...i gauged the first ones to a 6 but had to close them because my cheering coach said it looked bad for the squad when i took my earrings out and there were huge holes. now i want to get more piercings because it's fun. i think you need to experience piercings and body mods.
