Sushi

I probably now have worms crawling though my brain, but yes, I finally did it...

I...

ate...

raw...

fish!

Well, to be accurate, I should say that I ate raw seafood, since in addition to two kinds of tuna and salmon, we also ate squid and eel. Er, to be totally accurate, I guess the eel was smoked, not raw.

Anyway, it was a pleasant experience.

I was fortunate in that I was in the company of three experienced sushi eaters. They guided me in the zen of sushi. I am guessing it was a good sushi restaurant given that we were the only occidentals in the place.

Since I know how to use chopsticks, and I like soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger, I figured I was off to a good start. I was instructed in the art of mixing the soy sauce and wasabi, as well as the etiquette for taking the sushi from the common platter, and the dipping of the sushi in the soy/wasabi mixture.

The sushi wasn't at all fishy tasting, which I am told is a good indication that the seafood was fresh. The Asahi beer served as a nice counterpoint to the food, and helped to extinguish the fire of some of the more "adventurous" items.

The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the squid. It wasn't that I had an issue with the flavor, but I didn't care for the texture. I can't exactly describe what I didn't like about it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again.

Actually, I don't know that I will now start going out of my way to eat sushi, but I also won't squirm if I am with a group of people who really want to have sushi for dinner.

Though I'm a Japanese, I don't like eating sushi very much, simply because, like you, it's raw fish. But, tuna's good, isn't it? :)
