Jeanie and I each have our own side of the bed...
If we are both lying on our backs, my side is the left side.
This has not always been the case. In our last two houses, my side was the right side.
The primary determinant governing which side is who's is the location of the bathroom relative to the bed. Jeanie sleeps on the side closer to the bathroom. Having this one primary guiding principle makes traveling much easier, as I always know immediately upon entering a room which side of the bed will be mine.
Anyway, the main point of this entry was the following observation which just occurred to me:
Even if Jeanie is away, as she is now, I stick to my side of the bed.
On the one hand, logic might dictate that when I am alone in the bed, I would center myself in the bed, thus giving me (and the puppies) the most room.
On the other hand, habit would dictate that I would stick to "my place."
I guess it could also be argued that it makes sense for me to stay on my side, since that gives me easier access to my night stand.
On the other hand, if I moved to the middle, I would have easier access to the telephone and the bathroom.
Of course, that begs another question...
If I did sleep in the middle of the bed, which side would I exit from were I to need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night? Would I exit from my "normal side" even though it is on the far side relative to the bathroom, or would I take the most direct route?
When your bed partner is away, do you stick to your side?
