To Jump Through Hoops Of Fire, One Must Fly

And to fly, one must jump through hoops of fire...

My friends at the FAA informed me today, during my weekly call to them to get a status, that I will have to visit yet another doctor, and have yet another set of tests run. I don't know exactly what tests yet, because I haven't actually received the letter which provides the detail yet.

It is amazing how long and painful (metaphorically speaking) this process has been.

So far, I have:

1. Had my initial visit to the AME - get deferred
2. Had to go to my family physician to get a form filled out and two letters written
3. Went back to the AME to give him the form and the letters - get deferred again
4. Waited three months for the FAA to tell me what they were concerned about and what additional information I needed to provide
5. Contacted three doctors I had seen years ago to get my medical records, which required having them fax me forms to release the information, then faxing the forms back to them, then getting the records, then sending the records to the FAA
6. Waited another month for the FAA to inform me that they wanted more tests - get deferred again

I will then have to find a doctor to perform the tests, send the tests to the FAA, then wait yet again to see if that will be enough to satisfy them.

I had considered just giving up if I didn't get the certificate this time, but then I decided I'll be damned if I'm going to let them take away my dream without putting forth my best effort.

So, I guess I'll wait a week or so to see exactly what I must do next to prove that I am medically fit to operate an airplane...

In the mean time, I have pretty much finished studying for the written/oral part of the BFR, so maybe I'll schedule getting that out of the way while I wait to find out exactly how high and hot the next hoop will be...
