Still Hacking Away

For whatever reason, I've been more interested in working on the mechanics of the blog lately...

As I posted yesterday, I fixed a display bug that had vexed me for some time.

One of the other issues that I've had is the occasional double post of a comment because the comment processing takes so long.

In March, I had added a note on the post comment form indicating that the submission process was slow due to the spam checking.

Unfortunately, it turns out that there are three different places where a comment can be entered/submitted, and I only made the change in one place.

In addition, once you press the submit button, a new screen pops up to indicate that the comment is being submitted, so you lose the reminder to be patient.

One would think updating this screen, plus the "other" two submission screens would be straight forward, but...

Because I have made hacks to hacks, tracing the locations of the various affected files turned out to be quite convoluted.

The display of the template editing screen doesn't help either, and is further complicated by the extensive hacks I have made to the base templates, which include the creation of many "sub" templates which I use like modules or objects called from the main template.

Anyway, turns out that the "processing" screen is called from the "add subscriber" hack I implemented by ScriptyGoddess, which is hidden in a subdirectory off of the root of the blog directory rather than off of the MT directory as is the case with the MT-Blacklist code.

The comment entry forms are scattered between the Individual Entry Archive, which displays as a link on the templates page beneath the Archive-Related Templates section, and the Comment Listing Template and Comment Preview Template, which both appear as buttons beneath the Miscellaneous Templates heading.

I guess I really should upgrade to the current version of MT, but I haven't quite gotten that re-energized...
